The Singular Experience
The Singular Experience, an exhibition at Gagosian Le Bourget, Paris, features Walter De Maria's final sculpture, Truck Trilogy (2011–17), presented for the first time outside the United States. This work, comprising three 1950s Chevrolet pickup trucks modified with stainless steel rods, is the centerpiece of the exhibition. It is shown alongside other rarely seen sculptures, drawings, films, and archival materials, highlighting De Maria's interest in precise measurement and the imagined.
The exhibition also includes 13, 14, 15 Meter Rows (1985), a floor sculpture of polished stainless-steel rods arranged in increasing lengths, reflecting De Maria's fascination with mathematical sequences and visual harmony. The show explores themes of rhythm, frequency, and harmony, tracing connections to De Maria's background as a percussionist and his involvement in avant-garde music projects in the 1960s.
