"A Good Shelf" (Volume II)

Tom Sachs

Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Marais presents "A Good Shelf" (Volume II), an exhibition by Tom Sachs that combines his signature bricolage sculpture techniques with ceramics, a practice he began in 2012. This exhibition is a continuation of a show held at Thaddaeus Ropac London in autumn 2025. It features hand-formed ceramics by the New York-based artist, displayed on unique shelves constructed from found materials, furthering Sachs's exploration of ritual and process.

The ceramics, inspired by the East Asian tea bowl (chawan), can serve as cups or bowls. Sachs's study of ceramics deepened after his 2012 "Space Program: Mars" mission, where he created a bricolage version of the Japanese tea ceremony. These chawans are presented as sculptures in their own right, with the London and Paris exhibitions being the first European shows dedicated to them. Sachs connects his interest in the tea ceremony and space travel to a desire for spirituality, sensuality, and "stuff," defining these as essential components of sculpture.
