Tetsuya Ishida
Gagosian is presenting a solo exhibition of paintings by the late Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida (1973–2005), marking the very first presentation dedicated to his work in France. Opening on June 10, 2026, at the gallery's rue de Ponthieu space in Paris, the exhibition showcases Ishida's vivid, hyper-detailed canvases. The artist came of age during Japan’s “lost decade” of the 1990s—a turbulent era defined by a severe economic recession and intense social displacement—and his unique scenarios directly address the psychological and sociological anxieties that plagued his generation.
Ishida’s wildly imaginative paintings feature blank-faced, anonymous young men caught in bizarre, dreamlike situations, frequently undergoing unsettling mechanical or animalistic metamorphoses. Drawing from a diverse range of influences, including Surrealism, Social Realism, and Japanese popular culture, his works act as powerful symbols for the loss of individual agency. Ultimately, the exhibition highlights Ishida's nihilistic yet deeply observant realism, illustrating how contemporary human identity can become consumed and displaced by a society organized around strict labor structures, consumerism, and technological dependency.
