Bonsai
Tadashi Kawamata's exhibition "Bonsai" at Mennour, Paris, presents a new series of works inspired by the traditional art of miniature trees. Kawamata, a frequent visitor to the Bonsai Museum in Tokyo, translates this aesthetic into his own practice by attaching miniature cabins, termed "Tree Hut," to simple branches. These works explore the technical and poetic challenges of integrating human construction with natural forms, posing questions about durability and coexistence.
The "Bonsai" series is situated within Kawamata's broader exploration of "Maquettes and Models," which contrasts with his large-scale "Projects." While "Maquettes" are two-dimensional painted panels with constructions, and "Models" are small-scale realizations, the "Bonsai" works represent a unique fusion. The exhibition also features a large in situ fresco where painted trees serve as a backdrop for these wooden huts, bringing the "Bonsai" to life and evoking a sense of burgeoning nature.
