Hard Edge, Soft Core

Samir Mougas

Galerie Eric Mouchet, Brussels presents "Hard Edge, Soft Core," the first solo exhibition by French artist Samir Mougas. The show brings together sculptures, ceramics, and paintings, highlighting the artist's diverse practice and singular visual vocabulary. Mougas, born in 1980, draws inspiration from everyday objects and technological concepts, blending influences from electronic music, science fiction, car tuning, and industrial design.

The exhibition features the "Hard Edge Soft Core" series of glazed stoneware sculptures, which are ceramic casts of car hubcaps adorned with vibrant glazes. These pieces explore the tension between the formal rigor of mass-produced design and the organic, artisanal quality of the material. Also included are large-scale sculptures generated from AI prompts and translated into physical forms using materials like resin and polystyrene, evoking imagined machines and dystopian food scenarios. A selection of paintings from 2021, characterized by geometric shapes and repeating patterns, further underscores the artist's consistent exploration of seriality and the interplay between systematic and sensory elements.
