Leather And S&M Underground
Galerie Eric Mouchet, Brussels presents "Leather And S&M Underground," an exhibition featuring the work of Robert Mapplethorpe and Herbert Tobias. The exhibition includes Mapplethorpe's "Portfolio X," alongside other explicit photographs, intimate psychological portraits, and unique Polaroids. These vintage prints, created during the artist's lifetime and often signed by him, offer insight into Mapplethorpe's status as a queer and subversive cultural figure of the 1970s and 1980s.
Complementing Mapplethorpe's work are approximately fifteen prints by the German photographer Herbert Tobias. The exhibition aims to draw a dialogue between the two artists, highlighting their homoerotic works created from the early 1950s (Tobias) and 1970s (Mapplethorpe). Both artists' oeuvres are noted for their contributions to queer visibility and their shaping of a virile, sadomasochistic imagery within gay fetish practices.
