Mélodie Mortelle

Quentin Gouevic

Galerie Nathalie Obadia presents "Mélodie Mortelle", the third solo exhibition by Quentin Gouevic. The exhibition features a new body of work developed after the artist's previous exhibition, "Cendres et Soleil". Gouevic describes his process as empirical, with paintings emerging like memories that help him organize his thoughts and vision of the world. He seeks a pictorial response to existential questions, aiming to "charge" his painting with memory, identity, and alchemy.

The artist explores the stratigraphy of his paintings, building, erasing, and superimposing pictorial spaces to understand the world. This process is complemented by a practice of destruction, which he finds liberating and allows him to take new risks. The exhibition title, "Mélodie Mortelle", references a film by Takeshi Kitano and its soundtrack, which the artist feels resonates with the atmosphere of some of his recent paintings. The works in the exhibition are born from multiple intentions and eclectic concerns, reflecting the protean dimension of his oil painting practice.
