Double Trouble

Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels presents "Double Trouble," Pieter Vermeersch’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition features a restrained series of recent works on marble, exploring the artist's characteristic gradations and questioning the nature of painting when it engages with a surface that is already an image.

The works present a duality where two orders of imagery meet: the mineralogical image of the stone and the pictorial image introduced by the artist. The relationship between these is fluid, with one potentially becoming the other. Abstraction is derived from the material itself, with the stone serving as a motif that can come to the fore while the painting recedes. This dynamic interplay, described as a symbiosis that carries an inherent impossibility, creates an ambiguity where the material can appear as figuration and the painted surface as abstraction.
