Coco Samba
Coco Samba, a solo exhibition by Philippine d’Otreppe, is on view at EDJI Gallery in Brussels. The exhibition features new works by the Belgian artist, who works across painting, drawing, and ceramics. D'Otreppe's practice is rooted in observations of daily life, often beginning with sketches, photographs, or anecdotes that are later reinterpreted in her studio.
This body of work was developed following a six-week residency in Rio de Janeiro. D'Otreppe filled notebooks with scenes from the city, including beaches, markets, and street life, which inform the compositions in this exhibition. The resulting paintings and ceramic works aim to capture the experience of looking, collecting, and remembering, rather than providing a literal depiction of a place. An installation of scanned sketchbook pages, photographs, and notes is also presented.
