Earth Not a Globe
Earth Not a Globe is an exhibition at CONTRETYPE, Brussels, featuring the ongoing project by Philippe Braquenier that began in 2016. The project, which takes its name from a foundational text of the flat Earth conspiracy theory, explores the community of "Flat-Earthers." These individuals believe the Earth is flat, trusting their empirical observations over scientific consensus and dismissing images of a spherical Earth as fabricated.
Braquenier, using a 4x5 camera with a documentary approach, stages scenes that draw from the mythology of Flat-Earthers. The exhibition questions the act of seeing in the post-truth era, suggesting that facts are subjective, truth is a notion to be viewed with suspicion, reality is a social construct, and human perception is inherently biased. Some works in the exhibition were produced specifically for this presentation.
