Sfondo

This exhibition, "Sfondo," marks Pauline Bazignan's first solo show at Backslash, Paris. The presentation features paintings and sculptures that explore a new direction in her artistic practice. Drawing inspiration from the Italian Renaissance, Bazignan reinterprets iconic artworks, focusing on the background landscapes. The exhibition delves into Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and the enigmatic scenery surrounding the "Mona Lisa," attempting to reconstruct and reimagine these hidden dimensions through layered painting techniques and the use of water to create transformative effects.

The works in "Sfondo" highlight the background elements, echoing Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato technique through a play of appearance and disappearance. The exhibition also includes sculptures inspired by these landscapes, rendered in blues and earthy tones, which extend the dialogue with da Vinci's palette and compositions by translating them into three-dimensional forms. A diptych based on Paolo Uccello's "The Battle of San Romano" serves as a transition between Bazignan's earlier work and the new series.
