Drawing from Life

Paula Rego

This exhibition at Galerie Lelong Matignon, Paris, focuses on Paula Rego's "Drawing from Life," an intense three-year period (2005–2007) of drawing and lithography in her London studio. Approaching seventy, Rego embraced these mediums for their immediacy, allowing exploration of darker, complex themes. Her work often draws from literature, including "The Pig King" by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, referenced in the "Prince Pig" series, and Martin McDonagh's "The Pillowman" and unpublished stories.

Rego, born in Lisbon in 1935 and died in London in 2022, fled Portugal's totalitarian regime in 1951 to study art in the UK. She became associated with the School of London, alongside artists like Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Her work is held in major collections worldwide, including the Tate Modern and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is Rego's third exhibition at Galerie Lelong.
