Works
White Cube Paris presents an exhibition dedicated to Park Seo-Bo’s signature ‘Ecritures’ (Writings), a body of work initiated in the late 1960s. This exhibition spans over five decades of the artist’s practice, from early ‘Ecriture’ paintings conceived during his time in Paris in the late 1970s to later works exploring innovations in material and colour. The ‘Ecritures’ are created through disciplined repetition, informed by Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, with the artist often completing each work in a single sitting.
Marking the first presentation of his ‘Newspaper Ecritures’ in Paris, the exhibition includes works conceived during the artist's return to the city in the late 1970s. These pieces were created by inscribing iterative pencil markings onto newspaper, with fragments of text and mastheads often remaining visible beneath the paint. The exhibition also features later ‘Pencil Ecriture (colour)’ paintings, produced as his health declined, which demonstrate a formal elegance and signal an expansion of his practice towards collective healing. The works exhibited bear witness to the artist’s lifelong effort to record his emotional life and the circumstances of his time.
