Lucky You

Mathilde Albouy

Mathilde Albouy presents "Lucky You" at Galerie Derouillon, Étienne Marcel, Paris. This exhibition features a new series of lacquered wood sculptures, many filled with a river-green wax. The works evoke a world that is familiar yet altered, described by the artist as a "swamp," characterized by sinuous forms and gleaming surfaces. Albouy draws inspiration from science fiction, particularly the corrosive substance in Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's "Stalker," and feminist science fiction that explores alternative realities.

The exhibition incorporates elements like wall-mounted "Widows" sculptures, referencing gothic literature and patriarchal structures, and a central stripper's platform reimagined as a carousel. Recurring motifs include eyes and breasts, as seen in the "I see you (III)" piece, which reverses the viewer's gaze. The title "Lucky You" alludes to games, chance, and the neon aesthetic of 1970s strip clubs, creating a tension between play, seduction, and danger. Albouy's work examines contemporary surveillance and exposure, drawing parallels to social media and the concept of "sousveillance."
