Empty Creatures
Masaomi Yasunaga presents "Empty Creatures" at Pierre Marie Giraud Brussels, running from May 22nd to June 20th. Yasunaga, based in Japan, utilizes an experimental approach to ceramics, blending sculpture, vessel, relief, and image. His practice is informed by postwar Japanese avant-garde ceramics, focusing on how clay and glazes transform through firing into surfaces that appear both ancient and contemporary. This exhibition features new "Empty Creature" sculptures, mosaic wall works, mosaic vessels, stone vessels, and the "Silence Bird" series.
The works incorporate recurring motifs of birds, animals, and still-life compositions within textured surfaces made from various glazes, minerals, and metals. The mosaic pieces introduce a pictorial element, resembling faded frescoes or archaeological fragments. The "Empty Creature" sculptures explore ambiguous forms that bridge the gap between vessels, animals, and imagined beings. Yasunaga treats glaze as a dynamic material, allowing the unpredictable firing process to shape the final objects, resulting in works that feel uncovered and exist between fragility and permanence.
