Qualia
Bernier/Eliades Gallery, Brussels, presents QUALIA, the third solo exhibition by French artist Martin Belou. The exhibition explores the subjective and internal dimensions of perception, using the philosophical term "qualia" which refers to the irreducible qualities of lived experience. Belou's practice involves immersive installations, objects, and sculptures that engage with their environment, activating physical and atmospheric elements like architecture, light, and scent to shape the conditions of experience.
Belou constructs a perceptual environment where materials and forms act as conduits for elusive phenomena, making perception itself the medium. Drawing from diverse sources including found objects and organic fragments, he creates a precise yet open visual language. Recurring shapes and motifs establish subtle connections between the artworks and their surroundings, blurring the lines between object and milieu, presence and sensation. Martin Belou (b. 1986) lives and works in Marseille.
