Vortex

Manuela Marques

Manuela Marques' exhibition "Vortex" at Galerie Anne Barrault, Paris, explores natural phenomena such as winds, storms, and volcanic forces through a series of twelve photographs taken between 2019 and 2022. Works like "Storm" (2022) and the diptych "Phénomènes" (2018) capture transitions between elements, while others, such as "L’Œil du cyclone 1" (2022), juxtapose different scales of space and time, from geological to human. The "wall of images" in the exhibition emphasizes these connections and scale shifts, mixing images of volcanic activity and solar system studies with everyday observations.

A distinct section features "Records" (2018), four photographs of seismic recording strips from the Azores. These documents, used from 1903 to the early 1980s, capture seismic activity, notably the 1957-1958 Capelinhos volcano eruptions that reshaped the islands. Marques uses photography here as a seismograph, attempting to record invisible, subterranean forces and posing the question of how to document the unseizable.
