Clap
For his second solo exhibition at Mazel Galerie Brussels, titled Clap, Levalet explores cinema as his subject matter, drawing from various genres and eras. The artist appropriates and fragments cinematic imagery, primarily through assemblages of vintage film posters that he cuts and recomposes into new, hybrid visuals. His recurring self-portrait character is integrated into these reconstructed scenes, acting as both participant and observer within these fictional spaces.
The exhibition also features works incorporating manipulated film reels and clapboards, elements that become narrative devices. Levalet engages with space, scale, and popular references, introducing subtle distances to prompt reflection on viewer projection and identification. Clap presents a personal and playful interpretation of cinema, intertwining the artist's imagination with that of the audience by reappropriating cinematic codes and mythologies.
