Everything Fades. The Horizon Recedes.

The exhibition "Everything Fades. The Horizon Recedes." at Michèle Schoonjans Gallery, Brussels, features works by Laurent Dumortier. The artist's practice is informed by his observations of everyday windows and their interiors, often captured during night-time walks. These observations, along with sketches and notes, serve as traces of past moments, viewed through the perspective of a "voyeur."

Dumortier's work delves into themes of living conditions, family memories, violence, and the domestic space. He questions the visible by exploring the interplay of light, shadow, presence, and absence, drawing parallels to Michaël Foessel's observation that "During the night, the gaze must embrace the unpredictable." The resulting drawings emerge from a tension between remembered reality and new plastic forms on the charcoal surface.
