Works
Kishio Suga is a significant figure in Japanese contemporary art, known for his exploration of the fundamental nature of the world through the manipulation of real-world elements. His practice, which began in 1968, moved beyond traditional painting and sculpture, existing in an "unidentified zone of practice and theory." Suga's work investigates the inherent possibilities of matter, treating it as an active participant rather than inert material. His approach, alongside artists like Nobuo Sekine and Lee Ufan, was retrospectively linked to the Mono-ha movement.
This exhibition at Mendes Wood DM, Paris, presents two facets of Suga's oeuvre: his two-dimensional works and his installations. The two-dimensional pieces, including works on paper and assemblages, investigate the concept of space, activating the dimensions and qualities of their environment through the interplay of form and negative space. His installations, such as "Boundary of Marginal Scenery" (1994/2026), are site-specific, responding to the unique conditions of the exhibition space and highlighting the immanent characteristics of space itself.
