Cat island blues
This exhibition features the work of Simon Vansteenwinckel, focusing on the Lakota (Sioux) people of North and South Dakota. The series documents the Omaka Tokatakiya (Future Generations Ride), an annual 15-day, 450 km horseback journey undertaken in December. Participants follow the historical route of Chief Big Foot's tribe, who were massacred at Wounded Knee in 1890. The exhibition highlights the challenging living conditions on reservations, marked by poverty and dependence, while also emphasizing the Lakota people's resilience, spirituality, and pride.
Vansteenwinckel, a Belgian photographer known for his documentary projects using black and white film, captures the spiritual and educational aspects of the ride. During the journey, elders guide younger generations, teaching them horsemanship and fostering a connection to their nation's history and soul. The accompanying book, "Aux Ombres," has received multiple awards. Vansteenwinckel's diverse body of work explores themes of travel, landscape, and cultural observation.
