What Remains

The exhibition "What Remains" at Hopstreet Gallery, Brussels, features works by Jonathan Callan and Susanne Wellm. Callan's practice explores the limitations of language, often using texts, books, and photographs sourced from secondhand materials. His work reconciles a deep interest in materiality with literary history, playfully and sometimes darkly re-presenting abstract concepts in physical forms through abrasion, removal, and reconstitution.

Susanne Wellm's practice intertwines historical, autobiographical, and tactile dimensions, drawing from an extensive archive of photographic material. Her conceptual approach combines existing motives with her own photographs to create new narratives that question meaning-making between individuals and their environment. Wellm's unique works, often multi-layered, blur fact and fiction and incorporate textiles through weaving or threading, engaging with traditional handcraft while pushing the perception of photography.
