Works
Almine Rech Paris, Matignon presents Jean Dewasne’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, running from January 10 to March 14, 2026. Dewasne, a significant figure in the revival of geometric abstraction, emerged in the 1950s as a daring artist of his generation. In post-war Paris, he utilized pure geometry and color as symbols of a burgeoning humanism, integrating contemporary scientific thought and technological advancements. While his early work drew from abstraction pioneers, he soon developed a distinct vision employing industrial materials and a monumental scale.
Dewasne’s artistic journey included studies in music and architecture before he turned to abstraction in 1943. He co-founded the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, a key platform for abstract art. His work evolved from early Cubist-influenced paintings to a lighter style, and he became a proponent of geometric awareness alongside artists like Vasarely and Delaunay. A theorist, Dewasne wrote "Traité d’une peinture plane" and established the Atelier d’art Abstrait. His practice later expanded to include "anti-sculptures" and monumental works, reflecting his engagement with industrial aesthetics and a utopian vision of art's role in societal renewal.
