A Minima
The exhibition "A Minima" at Mennour, Paris, presents a dialogue between the historical artist Jean Degottex (1918–1988) and the contemporary artist Sidival Fila (born 1962). Degottex's late work is characterized by a move towards extreme simplification, where gesture recedes and the canvas becomes a surface for subtle traces, reflecting an interest in Eastern philosophy and a quest for fundamental reduction.
Fila's practice, which pays homage to Degottex, also explores minimalism and the latent energy within materials. Using simple elements like old fabrics and liturgical garments, Fila transforms surfaces through meticulous stitching, creating tension and incision. Both artists are noted for their pursuit of "minimal art," viewing emptiness not as void but as a space for artistic occurrence and energetic vibration.
