A journey along the line of time
German-Iranian artist Haleh Redjaian explores abstraction to examine the human tendency to impose structures on reality. Her works, including drawings, carpets, and thread installations, utilize grids and lines as frameworks for geometric compositions. Redjaian incorporates irregularities and deviations within these ordered systems, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of life. Her drawings feature layered repetitive lines in graphite, overlaid with geometric shapes in watercolor and gold details, subtly disrupting the rigid structures.
Inspired by Gaston Bachelard's "The Poetics of Space," Redjaian's ongoing series "Notes for Daydreaming" (begun in 2018) investigates the phenomenology of reverie. The artist interprets her visual language in hand-knitted carpets sourced from Iran, where she stitches fine threads onto the minimalist white surfaces. This approach creates a dialogue between tradition and modernity, and Middle-Eastern ornament and Western aesthetics, reflecting on the connection between mental processes, space, and past experiences.
