The Response from the Parisian Art Critics is Swift and Decisive

Glen Baxter

This exhibition at Semiose, Paris, marks the first presentation of Glen Baxter's work at the gallery and serves as a tribute to the artist, who passed away on March 29th. Baxter had been preparing this long-planned project with Semiose, which was to be the beginning of a new collaboration. The exhibition features a collection of works on paper, also included in a recently published book of interviews by Semiose.

In a conversation with curator Bernard Blistène shortly before his death, Baxter discussed his early involvement with the St. Mark's Church scene in New York, his admiration for genre cinema and absurd theatre, and his exploration of the interplay between text and image. His distinctive drawings, characterized by nonsense and wit, play with language and combine sophisticated prose with popular, anachronistic imagery, creating a disjunctive effect. Blistène notes Baxter's work resists easy interpretation, offering a singular experience where meaning does not equate to signification, and highlights the artist's subversive critique of contemporary art through humor and irony.
