MISS AMERICA
Francisco Tropa's exhibition, MISS AMERICA, at Galerie Jocelyn Wolff in Paris, explores themes of vanitas and the measurement of time, drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy, and history. The exhibition centers around an imagined boat named Miss America, which visitors metaphorically board upon entering the gallery. This narrative visualizes Tropa's concept, allegorically invoking the maritime world and the ancient Roman notion of 'naufragium,' referring to uncontrolled falls, such as shipwrecks or chariot accidents.
The exhibition is partly inspired by a bronze dice tower, an object that symbolizes chance and orchestrated falls. While the first part of the 'Miss America' narrative was previously shown in Bologna, the Paris presentation includes two new chapters: 'Poor Captain' and 'Shipwreck.' Complementing the visual narrative, three songs written by a collaborator from the maritime world, reflecting sailors' language, are available to visitors in a leaflet, offering insights into the exhibition's allegory.
