Inkstand – Fragments of Intent
The exhibition "inkstand – fragments of intent" at Galerie Eric Mouchet, Brussels, features recent works by Eva L’Hoest, including "Inkstand – Fragments of Intents", "Ne pas réveiller les chiens qui dorment", and "The Inmost Cell". L’Hoest explores how technologies shape human actions and imagination, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary digital processes. Her sculptures, created using a digital adaptation of the lost-wax technique, explore the dialogue between fire and code, metal and data. These works are presented as remnants of a future archaeology, retaining the memory of gestures and the codes that influenced them.
The "Inkstand – Fragments of Intents" sculptures, made from bismuth and tin alloys, emerge from sand molds. They are described as self-contained, domestic dioramas featuring human and animal figures, illuminated from within. These are displayed in vitrines reminiscent of B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning chambers, prompting reflection on behavioral conditioning from laboratories to digital interfaces. The "Ne pas réveiller les chiens qui dorment" series is a contemporary altarpiece, digitally sculpted and 3D printed, translating manual modeling into a digital clay. The visible layers of the print reveal the mechanical gesture of the machine, while the figures evoke themes of judgment, revelation, and protection within a technological context.
