Evaporation Ceremony

Erica Mahinay

Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels, presents Evaporation Ceremony, the first solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Erica Mahinay. The exhibition features a new body of paintings where Mahinay uses her fingers as instruments to apply paint, leaving gestural yet deliberate traces on the canvas. These abstract works incorporate a latent grid structure that organizes the composition without imposing strict rules, and each canvas asserts a distinct chromatic identity.

The second part of the exhibition includes ceramic installations created during Mahinay's residency in Guadalajara. These works, which also feature fingerprints and direct touch, engage more openly with the figurative. Human forms emerge and recede, and the clay bears marks of time and ritual alongside the artist's touch, acting as a material of quiet testimony. The exhibition's title, Evaporation Ceremony, encapsulates this dialogue between the liquid immediacy of paint and the solidity of clay, suggesting a rite of transformation.
