Christian Marclay
Christian Marclay's exhibition at White Cube Paris features new monotypes and collages that explore the vinyl record as both material and image. Working with the format of LP covers, Marclay uses record sleeves as his primary medium, focusing on their surfaces, folds, creases, and marks of handling.
In his monotype series, Marclay inks 7", 10", and 12" record sleeves and covers, transferring their tactile histories onto paper as unique impressions. The new collage series, 'Oculi,' utilizes vintage record sleeves where the central circular aperture frames fragments of images from the underlying covers, such as hands, eyes, and mouths, transforming the packaging into a compositional element.
