Morceaux Choisis
The exhibition "Morceaux Choisis" (Selected pieces) at Xavier Hufkens Rivoli, Brussels, features Bertrand Lavier's latest works. The show includes a damaged Fiat 500, presented as found rather than fabricated, questioning the boundary between art and everyday objects, representation and reality. This piece, part ready-made and part painted object, challenges perception by existing as a hybrid artefact.
Upstairs, Lavier presents "Inclusions," abstract canvases encased in acrylic resin, also selected rather than made. These works, suspended between object and sculpture, explore the separation of painting from sculpture. Additionally, "Brushstrokes," fabricated from painted steel, translate gesture into three-dimensional form, occupying an ambiguous space between painting and sculpture. The exhibition also includes new paintings from Lavier's "chantiers" series, such as painted vitrines and mirrors, further investigating the interplay between image, object, and display.
