I Would Follow Her By Ground And Sea
Mariane Ibrahim Gallery, Paris, presents "I Would Follow Her by Ground and Sea," an exhibition by Ayana V. Jackson. The show features key works exploring the figure of the woman as a site of memory, power, and futurity. The lower ground floor displays "From the Deep: In the Wake of Drexciya," a series inspired by the mythological universe of the techno duo Drexciya, which imagines an underwater civilization inhabited by descendants of enslaved Africans. Jackson uses her own body to investigate historical absence, loss, and survival, envisioning a world shaped by resilient women.
Upstairs, the exhibition includes "Dear Sarah" (2016) and "You Forgot to See Me Coming" (2023). "Dear Sarah" examines the fragmented identity of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, a 19th-century figure under Queen Victoria's patronage. "You Forgot to See Me Coming" explores the histories of Black and Indigenous women in early 20th-century conflicts, such as the Mexican Revolution, highlighting their roles in liberation movements and challenging entrenched racist historiographies.
