Nymphäum
Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin presents Nymphäum, an exhibition of new works by Anselm Kiefer. Across more than 20 paintings, the artist uses richly layered paint and collaged elements to reimagine narratives from classical mythology. The exhibition title, translating to ‘nymphaeum’, refers to sanctuaries dedicated to nymphs in ancient Greece and Rome. Kiefer transforms the gallery space into his own painterly nymphaeum, continuing his decades-long exploration of the interplay between myth and material.
Kiefer’s practice involves amassing and reworking motifs to explore human history. In this series, he focuses on nymphs, figures from classical mythology embodying nature that remain relevant today. These figures serve as conduits for the idea of humanity’s deep connection to the natural world. Some nymphs are depicted in idyllic, classical settings, while others inhabit modern urban environments. The exhibition also features two painted triptych screens, described as offering protection to these ephemeral beings. Rivers, a recurring motif in Kiefer’s work, are also explored, with several pieces retracing myths of Naiaids, Nereids, and Oceanids, their figures dissolving into dark waters.
