Sensing

Allora & Calzadilla

Allora & Calzadilla's exhibition Sensing, their sixth solo show at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris, explores the porous boundary between organic, embodied perception and externalized, technological measurement systems. The artists investigate what it means to "feel" in environments increasingly dominated by detection technologies used for extractive logic. Their practice also highlights the subtle, often ineffable textures of somatic experience—decentralized flows of emotion, intuition, and memory—that resist quantification. By foregrounding what technical recording cannot capture, Sensing draws the viewer into the eco-poetic entanglements of material reality, blurring the lines of quantified perception.

The exhibition features a new body of work titled Pulse (2025), which begins with 24-hour seismic data, or the "Earth's pulse," translated into hand-drawn images by the artists. These compositions merge scientific documentation with gestural drawing, fusing the Earth's slow pulse with the human impulse to react and reinvent through embodied expression. Another series, Lightbound (2025), comprises glass sculptures with fiber optic filaments connected to the Parisian electrical grid, illuminating with a pulsating light that varies with urban energy load. Inspired by climbing plants, these works explore the convergence of bodily adaptation, technological mediation, and ecosystem resilience.
