La Fin Du Monde
La Fin du Monde, the first exhibition by Alfredo Jaar at Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach, Brussels, examines extractive industries and the global supply chains of critical minerals. The exhibition centers on the work The End of the World (2023-2024), which features ten of the world's most precious minerals. Jaar's work addresses the geopolitical tensions and environmental devastation linked to resource extraction, drawing parallels between events in Chile, Greenland, and Ukraine.
The artist spent five years researching the subject in collaboration with political geologist Adam Bobbette. Bobbette's accompanying essays explore the political nature of 'critical minerals' and propose a new ontology that views geological materials not as dead matter but as part of an ecological community. The exhibition design utilizes the gallery's nave to emphasize the scale and light of the work, with surrounding emptiness intended to convey its gravity.
