Signs And Wonders
Abdelkader Benchamma returns to Templon Paris Beaubourg for his fourth solo exhibition, Signs and Wonders. The works explore shifts in scale and pareidolia, transforming surfaces into resonant spaces where various currents, figures, and landscapes unfold. The exhibition is conceived as the pages of a vast manuscript, turning the gallery into an in-between space that oscillates between unease and a longing for re-enchantment.
The artist's practice, long associated with black-and-white compositions, now foregrounds color in ambitious new formats. Benchamma's drawing style is rooted in literary, ethnographic, and esoteric influences, drawing from a vast collection of texts and images. The works on view are inspired by the 14th-15th century Arabic manuscript Kitab al-Bulhan and the 16th-century German engravings of the Book of Miracles, connecting celestial anxieties across centuries to contemporary narratives.
